Teachers can unleash student creativity with the powerful new 9.7-inch iPad and updates to iWork, Clips, GarageBand and Classroom. Classbook, a brand-new app, helps teachers guide activities and get insight into student progress. And IT admins can easily set up everyone with even more management features.
New 9.7-inch iPad
The new iPad is perfect for schools, with even more performance, support for Apple Pencil,1 iOS 11 and augmented reality experiences. iPad features a Multi-Touch Retina display, fast wireless, advanced front and back cameras, and a 10-hour battery. Student creativity and expression come to life on iPad with apps like Clips, Swift Playgrounds and GarageBand.
200GB of free iCloud storage is now available for all Managed Apple IDs, making it easy to access projects and files from anywhere.
Classbook is a new iPad app for sharing class materials, assigning activities within apps and seeing student progress. It enables teachers to tailor instruction based on individual student needs. And students can see assignments, submit work and view their own progress—all in one place. Classbook integrates with iWork so it’s easy for teachers to share projects, collaborate with students and provide instant feedback.
To get Classbook ready, IT admins set up Managed Apple IDs and class rosters in Apple School Manager. Rosters update automatically in Schoolwork, and progress reporting can be enabled in Apple School Manager. Admins and content managers can find apps that support Classbook in Apple School Manager.
Classroom has a new look and additional management features, including restrictions that require students to get permission to exit a teacher-created class from a supervised device, and the ability for teachers to lock student devices in a specific app with the Navigate command.
Classroom is coming to Mac this winter with the same great features for managing iPad in the classroom.
iWork and creativity app updates
Pages, Keynote, and Numbers add support for Apple Pencil with advanced drawing tools. Smart Annotation (beta) in Pages enables comments and notations that dynamically anchor to text. And book creation comes to Pages, so anyone can make beautiful interactive books right on iPad or Mac.
GarageBand offers a new downloadable “Toy Box” sound pack with free educational sound effects, including animals, vehicles and counting to ten in different languages.
Clips is updated with additional Live Titles, animated labels and stickers, and new posters for creating animated title cards, including education-themed blackboard and notebook designs.
Apple productivity and creativity apps are available for free in Apps and Books within Apple School Manager.
iOS 11 brings augmented reality (AR) to iPad so students can learn in entirely new ways with apps—they can visualise 3D graphs and shapes with GeoGebra AR, discover river ecosystems with WWF Free Rivers, and explore frog anatomy and complete virtual dissections with Froggipedia. Admins and content managers can find AR apps in Apple School Manager.2
Managed software updates. With iOS 11.3, IT admins can defer iOS software updates for up to 90 days. Simply set the number of days your institution requires to test releases in your MDM.
Assessment on iPad. iOS 11 brings new Automatic Assessment Configuration (AAC) restrictions, including Screen Recording, speak selected text, auto-capitalisation and Classroom remote observation.
Assessment on Mac. macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 adds support for a new assessment feature called Autonomous Single App Mode. With this feature, Mac computers can be automatically locked into an assessment app, making it easy to run assessments.
